October 30, 1938, in a rural town named Warthen, Georgia a child was born to Abron and Rosener Harris. His name was David Dan Harris. The name David was taken from his paternal grandfather and Dan was taken from his maternal grandfather.
At a very young age my brother Cloyd and I was taken to New Jersey to live with our mother who was now separated from our father. This arrangement only lasted for a little while and then we were returned to the South to live with our grandparents Dan and Josie.
In the fall of 1949, Dan had suffered all he could of the South. It was time to move North and this he did. After living in the South most of his life this would be a great undertaking for Dan and his family. My brother and I were finally reunited with our mother. Life was good for us but I soon became restless and wanted a change of life so I enlisted in the U. S. Army. After my initial training I was sent to Korea where my tour of duty was fourteen months. I was fortunate that the Korean Conflict had ended.
I married at a young age and was blessed with four children Dorenda, David Jr., Drew and Dwight. We were blessed to have fourteen grandchildren. My married life began to deteriorate and soon my wife and I separated. After the military I was drawn to the Taxicab industry. For the next twelve years this is what I would do. It was not always a pleasant job, but I had freedom to control my work habits and this I liked. This is where I was my own boss, made lots of money, met plenty of women and where I had a wonderful life and freedom to choose.
After my life of driving a cab I was inspired to write a book about my adventures in the industry. “Memoirs of a Taxi-man” was born and accepted by Exposition Press Inc. for publication at a cost I could not afford at the time. I want to thank my granddaughter Liz. For her support and inspiration in helping me to revive this book as well as others.
I want to acknowledge the memory of my wife Annie who is always watching over me from heaven above. To my children, grands, greatgrands and the remainder of my family, I thank you for your love and support.
